Patrick Boyer’s « Main Event » Experience...

The "Main Event", one of the most prestigious gathering in the poker world! "If, for fun, we were dividing the total number of players in the world by the number of players at this event, each of the 7,319 participants would represent the dream of some 20,000 people!" It is with this thought that the tournament director gave the kickoff of the Event 57 of the World Series of Poker, 41st edition.

Patrick Boyer was there. The League gave him the opportunity to win his entry and now, he was getting ready to live this experience... He held the seat no. 5, table 367 of Day 1B. This Tuesday, July 6th, heading towards the red section of the vast Amazon Room of the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas, it’s a safe bet that he was probably feeling a few butterflies of excitement tickle his stomach.

The starting stack is 30,000 units, Day 1B will include 4 levels, blinds go up every 2 hours and start at 50-100 and end at 150-300 with the introduction of an initial ante of 25... A tournament structure to benefit fully from this poker experience. With an entry fee of $10,000 US, we want to give you your money’s worth! In all, prizes totalling $68,798,600 will be shared between 747 players.

Patrick described the first day with enthusiasm. He has taken advantage of good cards along with good timing. He quickly realized that the game level and structure of the tournament are slow and so, everything is mostly played pre-flop. We fold a lot, there are rarely more than two or three players in the hand. Nobody came here to go out among the firsts! His game plan is to try to double up each day to give himself some room to manoeuvre and play with a minimum of comfort. He goes through the first day and ends up with 58,000 chips... mission accomplished!

He finds himself on the list of players for Day 2B, Saturday, July 10th. This day will be more laborious. He doesn’t get the expected cards and during this time, the antes increase. His table is comprised of players who are not very aggressive which favors him, as he explains: "You can get information without having to put all your chips in play." Among the memorable plays, a pocket King with which he doubles up. However, the lack of play will eventually nibble at his stack and slow down his progression. He survived this second day and finished with 43,600 chips.

The following Monday, Day 3, is the most exciting according to Patrick. There are 1857 players still in contention. He is sitting at a feature table, that is to say one of two featured tables with integrated cameras filmed by the ESPN sports network. The well-known professional Jason Mercier, described as an aggressive player and very technical is at this table. Patrick is the short stack. He quickly notices that his weakness in chips coupled with the game’s strongest opponents will prevent him from grabbing small pots. He will have to wait for a good hand. He hits three of a kind and manages to double up. Along the way, he also played a hand against Jason Mercier where their two AK met and had to share the pot. However, despite a valiant fight against time, Patrick saw his dream of reaching the money go up in smoke when, with a stack of only 14 big blinds and a risky manoeuvre, his Ace-10 must bow down to devastating full. He leaves in 1700th place.

Tell me Patrick, if you had to change anything, what would it be?

- I would be more aggressive when I have the position, I would take more risks. Playing ABC poker can bring you close, but you will not make it to the money. By playing tight, you’re predictable. Often there are some bad players at the table that always pay you, but with at a higher level of play, there are not so many bad players... You really must vary your style. At certain times, you have to gamble more, because if you stay put, you will incur big risks and will have to push each hand all-in when you get involved to succeed in making chips.

Would you repeat this Main Event experience?

- Absolutely! I learned a lot as a player. When you sit at a table with pros, it’s not the same game level. I changed my game. Already, I applied the lessons learned to online play and it works. I consider myself a seasoned player, I read a lot, played a lot. But what the Main Event and the league have given me is that everyone around me, my family, my friends now believe in me and I believe in me now... What this experience gave me is a lot of confidence. I played with the best and I became better...

At first glance, one can guess that under the guise of elegance, reserved and perhaps even slightly shy woman there is a warm and endearing woman.

She presents herself as having been married for thirty years and proudly mentions her two daughters and five grandchildren. She comes from a family where everyone played cards, her father, her mother and grandmother never said no to a little game of cards...

Now retired, she has previously enjoyed many trades. Hairdresser for many years, she later discovered by driving a school bus for disabled children, the pleasure of driving. She also organizes group travels, which leads her more than once to Las Vegas, Nevada. The year 2000 marked her last visit to the game capital. She used to play "Grand Prix", a popular game at the time.

To the unavoidable question: "Why do you play poker?", she answers candidly that poker allows her to get out of the house. Having undergone heart surgery two years ago and still living today with the effects arising from certain complications, poker has become her only hobby. That’s why she plays so much. Being very active, if she stays home, she will always find an excuse to work and won’t relax. She therefore prefers to play; it feels good to "see people." "Poker, it keeps the mind sharp", she says, "you always learn with poker, from the mistakes you make, you train yourself to make the right decision in the future". This game also allowed her to overcome her shyness, to come out of her shell. She is now more "direct", she says what she has to say and with a little smirk, admitted: "I am more "bad"!..."

It was at the Montreal Heart Center that Francine heard of the league for the first time. Her roommate was visited by a friend and her son, a tournament director who explained the operations of the league in detail. And hop! It piqued her curiosity! Shortly after, she began playing in Terrebonne, but it’s a finish in the top positions in a tournament in Deux-Montagnes which was really the kick-start to what would become a full-time hobby. "I thought it was fun!" she said, "I’ve known about Hold’em for 3 or 4 years. I played in casinos in the United States and Montreal. I also played cash tournaments in certain establishments in the city, but with the league what’s interesting is that you can play anywhere without going broke. I run around quite a bit!"

By daring to ask if, according to her, the male-dominated poker world seemed to be a more difficult environment for a woman, she answers quickly, without wanting to put the men on her back, that they are sometimes rougher towards women. The adrenaline helping, they can sometime try to play the tough guy or display their macho side. Then gently attempting to qualify her remarks, adding that we should not generalize, there may be aggressive men in poker, but women can be equally as aggressive when the situation demands it ... they don’t let themselves be pushed around!

To date, Francine Tremblay played a little more than 830 tournaments this season. If we make a quick calculation, this figure represents nearly three tournaments a day! Impressive! At our request, she explained that there was no mystery, she likes to play and she’s aiming for the player of the year title. Nothing can stop her. "I’ll relax once the year over," she says, "I really want to go to the top! Being the player of the year is my goal. It’s my objective!" Of course, this represents a challenge that requires a lot of tenacity. As she says: "It’s to win that I do all this. I want to finish first, play the Championship, make it to the money and why not wink at the players, show them that women know how to play, we can play!"

Currently, Francine Tremblay is first in the lifetime Canadian and Provincial rankings and is in a heated battle with her closest rivals for the seasonal ranking and the best average. Certainly a healthy rivalry, but with just a little spark in her eye, we can foresee that it will be a very enjoyable round won the day she takes the pole position over all...!

And catching her mischievous eyes, we find ourselves wishing it with all our hearts...

News from the World Series of Poker 2010-07-13

André and Odette have both been eliminated after two days of play. Hugo Foisy was eliminated on the second day.

Patrick Boyer is still in the race for the championship on the third day that began this afternoon.

Nearly 1857 players are left out of 7319 and Patrick still has 40,000 chips. He is seated at the table with Jason Mercier of the U.S. who has already won more than $ 78,000 in various WSOP tournaments this year.

The blinds are now 800 and 1600 with 200 antes.

The last 747 players will receive a minimum of $19,263USD

Hugo Foisy at the WSOP 2010-07-05

Arriving in Vegas at night is undoubtedly the best time, especially when it’s the first time you come to Sin City!

After a six hour flight, a few tears left behind when they left their two children for a big two weeks, Hugo Foisy and his wife Sheila become themselves, once again, children! Sitting in my rental car, both heads out, hair in the wind, they realize that they are now in the "Disneyland" for adults... VEGAS! Their eyes speak volumes about what awaits the two of them, here "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!" as they say!

However in the eyes of Hugo, I did see something more... the fulfillment of a dream! A dream he had the courage to share with his buddies nearly 4 years ago. Back then, they mocked him noting that it was expensive and impossible. He can now thumb his nose at his buddies, because after having spent time playing in the League, he can finally fulfill his dream inexpensively. Let’s recall that, thanks to his MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE at the Montreal Casino last November, his tournament expenses for him to live that dream, are being taken care of by the CNPTL !

Wearing his now traditional "tournament" beard (Hugo mentions that he normally does not have a beard) is kind of like a ritual that he imposed on himself, "I’m growing a beard before a big event and it brings me luck". Indeed he hasn’t shaved for a month now, like as if in the Stanley Cup series, Hugo is getting ready to be in his own "Series" mode, he will wear his famous cap, glasses and will be dressed all in black!

His registration is now confirmed for Tuesday, July 6, at noon, we will follow the progress of Hugo Foisy throughout the 41st World Series of Poker (WSOP). Be there!
