A

All-in: Bet all your remaining chips.

Ante: An obligatory bet required before the start of a hand. This bet is usually cheap.

Assorted: Cards of the same suit.

B

Backdoor: When the last two cards make a player’s hand.

Bankroll: The amount of money you have available to wager.

Bet: To put money or chips into the pot.

Blind (big): The bigger of the two compulsory bets in Hold’em and Omaha, made by the player immediately to the left of the small blind. In most cases, this bet is doubled that of the small blind.

Blind (small): The smaller of the two compulsory bets in Hold’em and Omaha, made by the player in the first position to the dealer’s left.

Bluff: Action to bet or raise with an inferior hand to force an opponent to fold a hand that we believe stronger than our own.

Board: the cards that are turned face up in the center of the table

Burn: To deal off the top card, face down, before dealing out the cards (to prevent cheating); or to set aside a card which has been inadvertently revealed.

Button: Chip used to indicate the player who is dealing. Also used to refer to the player on the button.

Buy-in: The minimum amount of money required to sit down in a particular game.

C

Call, See: To match, rather than raise, the previous bet.

Cardroom: The room or area in a casino where poker is played.

Cash games: Poker game played with real money.

Check raise: To check and raise in a betting round.

Check: To abstain from betting, reserving the right to call or raise if another player bets.

Check-raise :  A common deceptive play in which a player checks early in a betting round, hoping someone else will open. The player who checked then raises in the same round.

Chip: small discs used in lieu of currency.

Community cards: The cards dealt face up in the center of the table that are shared by all active players.

Connectors: Two or more cards of consecutive rank.

Cut card : A distinctive card, usually stiff solid-colored plastic, held against the bottom of the deck during the deal to prevent observation of the bottom card.

D

Deal: To distribute cards to players.

Dealer’s choice: A game in which each dealer, in turn, chooses the type of poker to be played. He chooses the type of poker from a predetermined list established before the start of the game.

Dominated Hand: A hand that will almost always lose to a better hand that people usually play. For instance, K3 is "dominated" by KQ. With the exception of strange flops (e.g., 3-3-X, K-3-X), it will always lose to KQ.

Deck: Pack of 52 cards.

E

Expectation: The profit or loss you would expect to make on average over a number of hands.

F

Face card, Paint, Picture card: King, Queen and Jack; face cards; court cards; picture cards.

Family pot: A pot in which most of the players at the table are involved.

Fill: To pull the card one is seeking.

Flop: In flop games, the first three community cards, which are turned face up simultaneously.

Flush: Five cards of the same suit.

Fold: To withdraw from the hand rather than bet or raise.

Four of a kind, Quads: Four cards of the same denomination. (Ex: 10-10-10-10)

Free card: A card that a player gets without having to call a bet.

Freeze-out: Tournament with no rebuy possibility.

Full house, Boat: Any three cards of the same denomination, plus any pair of a different denomination.

G

Gap: Rank separating two cards.

Gut shot: A card drawn to fill an inside straight.

H

Hand: A player’s best five cards.

Heads-up: A game between just two players.

High-Low: A poker game in which the highest and lowest hands share the pot, usually played in Omaha or Stud.

Hole cards: The cards concealed in a player’s hand in Hold’em.

House: The establishment; the casino or cardroom.

I

Ignorant end: The low end straight.

Isolate: To raise with the intention of reaching a heads up between yourself and a single other player.

Joker: The fifty-third card in the deck, used as a wild card.

K

Kicker: The highest unpaired side card.

L

Laydown: A tough choice to fold a good hand in anticipation of superior opposition.

M

Middle: A position on a round of betting somewhere in the middle.

N

No-Limit: A game in which players can bet as much as they have in front of them on any given round.

Nuts (the): The best possible hand given the board.

O

Offsuit: Two cards of different suits.

Open: To make the first bet.

Open-ended straight draw: Four consecutive cards requiring one at either end to make a straight.

Overcard: In flop games, a card higher than any card on the board.

Overpair: In flop games, a wired pair higher than any card on the board.

P

Pair: Two cards of the same denomination.

Pocket (pair) : being dealt a pair in the hole (example: pocket 8)

Position: In poker refers to the order in which players are seated around the table and the related poker stategy implications. Players who act first are in "early position"; players who act later are in "late position".

Pot: The money or chips in the center of the table.

Pot-Limit: A game in which the maximum bet is the total of the pot.

R

Rainbow: Three or four cards of different suits.

Rank: The value of a card. Each card has a suit and a rank.

Read: To try and determine your opponent’s cards or betting strategy.

Rebuy: To start again, for an additional entry fee, in tournament play (where permitted).

River: In flop games, the last round of betting on the fifth street card.

Royal straight flush: The best possible poker hand, consisting of the 10 through the Ace, all the same suit.

Rush: Several winning hands in a short period of time.

S

Satellite: A small-stakes tournament whose winner obtains cheap entry into a bigger tournament.

Show: At the showdown, declare the value of your hand.

Showdown: Showing of the cards once the hand is finished.

Slow play: Disguising the value of a strong hand by underbetting, to trick an opponent.

Split: In high-Low, the pot is separated between players.

Stack: The pile of chips in front of a player.

Stake: Chips which makes out the amount to risk.

Steal the pot: A bluff in late position, attempting to steal the pot from a table of apparently weak hands.

Straight flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit.

Straight: Five consecutive cards of mixed suits.

String Bet : A bet (more typically a raise) in which a player doesn’t get all the chips required for the raise into the pot in one motion. Unless he verbally declared the raise, he can be forced to withdraw it and just call. This prevents the unethical play of putting out enough chips to call, seeing what effect that had, and then possibly raising.

Super satellite: A multi-table poker tournament in which the prize is a free entrance to a larger tournament.

T

Three of a kind, Trips, Set: Three cards of the same denomination. (Ex: 7-7-7)

Tight: A conservative player who only plays strong hands, or playing on fewer hands than the norm.

Tilt: To play wildly or recklessly. A player is said to be "on tilt" if he is not playing his best, playing too many hands, trying wild bluffs, raising with bad hands, etc...

Turn: In flop games, the fourth card turned face up on the board.

Under the gun: The first to bet pre-flop.

Up card: An open card, a card dealt face-up.

Vegas: Name given to Texas Hold’em in France.

Wild card: A card designated as a joker, playable as any denomination.
